Company owners Rex and Wendy Patterson started Patterson Homes and Construction in Jacksonille Florida in 1994 and built the operation to be one of the largest home remodeling companies in the southeast, completing almost $100 million dollars in home remodeling. While on vacation in Corolla in 2013 the Patterson's fell in love with the Outer Banks and ended up not only relocating to Corolla but started a new business as Patterson Homes and Construction.

One difficult project was undertaken to prevent flooding on ground floor after severe storms. The creative solution was to raise the lower level floor height with 6 inches of concrete. Then new tile floor was added, ceiling ductwork moved to comply with code, and exterior door replaced. Doors were retro fitted, mechanics moved, and powder bath remodeled to fit change in floor.
