Our Story - Kenneth & Ericka Combs, Owners
I was born and raised in Durham and am committed to this diverse city. The people are warm and generous, there is a wide range of activities and opportunities, including hometown sports both professional and collegiate, entertainment, dining, and higher education. There is something for everyone! As a Durham businessman, I am committed to giving back to this city and will continue to sponsor activities here that benefit the less fortunate.
My story has led me to be driven and thrive in fast-paced environments. I discovered my entrepreneurial streak early in life, selling lemonade in front of the Agape Corner on Holloway Street when I was 12 years old. I began working in residential construction in my late teens. Over the years, with my wife Ericka’s support, I have worked 80-hour weeks, flipped cars, tools and houses to finance the transition of CQC from a two-person operation to what it is today. My employees did the rest and are CQC’s most precious resource. Together we try very hard to make our clients’ renovations as spectacular as possible.

Projects
Our design team played around with some fun shapes for an island. Ultimately, it was the additional seating options that created the final look for this unique kitchen island design.
Typically, a kitchen sink has a view. We might as well have something beautiful to look at. For this particular kitchen, the original floor plan was that of a peninsula design. Similar to an island, in the peninsula design it has cabinetry that is connected to the main row of cabinetry; creating an “L-shape”.
We knew that we needed more storage space and countertop work surface. At the very least we wanted to make a bigger window to see the outside. We designed the space to be swapped with the existing dining space. A Kitchen Renovation Swap! How exciting.
The design process went off without a hitch. We designed the new kitchen remodel, added a powder bath to the first floor, and even collaborated with our architect on adding a second story for the growing family.
Our designers quickly collaborated with the homeowner to create a pintrest worthy kitchen. Using classic and timeless pieces, such as a white shaker cabinet and a polished nickel finish, it left the space available to be decorated with pieces from any design style.
Working together with Matthew Konar Architect and his team, we were able to transform a dark and outdated kitchen into a mid-century modern bright and open living space. The kitchen was located in the “basement” so to speak. Therefore the main level was the living room and bedrooms. The lower level consisted of a multi-use space in the kitchen and den with a bedroom.
Adding to the sleek lines from the faucet choice, to the stainless hood, accented with the modern pendants make this a wonderful example of a transitional shaker white kitchen remodel. The homeowner’s are thrilled with the new open layout and we truly enjoyed collaborating with them from design to build.
For this kitchen renovation, the homeowner’s were eager to get started. But, quickly realized that a lot of planning goes into just making something pretty! Our designer was able to collaborate together with the homeowners on several different floor plan variations. Finally, able to settle on opening up the dining walls and living room, giving us a knee wall.
By using a neutral color scheme we helped to keep the renovation matching to the homes original aesthetics. This created the illusion that the bathroom was always there. Our favorite feature for this space was the shower area. With the open glass, and additional storage with the wall niche for shampoo and soaps, it was both aesthetically pleasing and functional. A beautiful blend of bright and neutral.
The team collaborated with the homeowners on a new layout that would incorporate the existing tub within the new shower space. This provided the luxury feeling of a hotel spa bathroom that the homeowner’s were looking for.
